Listening To: Christmas Lights by Coldplay
Happy, Happy Hanukkah: to those of you celebrating The Festival of Lights!
Christmas movies?
Did someone mention Christmas movies?!
Because I like Christmas movies for serious. And The Rogue Accountant and I watch a lotta them on Christmas Day (except he doesn't watch the uber-chicky ones with me ...). (And, yes, I realize that some of these aren't technically Christmas movies. I just get in the mood for them once winter rolls around, savvy?) Sadly, I'm not so cool and hipsterific when it comes to my favorite wintertime flicks. I wish I could say I gravitated toward old, gorgeous, classic films. Vintage stuff.
... But I mostly gravitate toward the quirk. Actually, I gravitate toward the movies that I loved when I was little.
My month (and the rest of my week) has pretty much consisted of all this (All This + Oreos) ...

I saved Mark Darcy for last.
Only Colin Firth could rock a Rudolph sweater so wonderfully, yes? But it's not just the festive sweater that I like about that movie. The chemistry between Bridget and Mark ... *shivers*. It makes me want to throw my microwave popcorn up into the air. Like buttered-confetti. (... ?)
(Note: Bridget Jones has some language and making-outage and etc., so if you're a younger reader, check the ratings and reviews and so on. My parents 100% wouldn't have let me watch it back in middle school. I wouldn't have been into it anyway though.)
I like many things about that particular film. But I'm not gonna lie ... I watch the entire movie anticipating The Line.
Bridget Jones' Diary contains one of my most favorite movie lines ever. My most favorite movie line is the one that's unspoken at the very end of Splendor in the Grass (don't YouTube the ending just to see it ... you have to watch the movie all the way through to feel the impact of the unsaid line). (Trivia: My second favorite movie line is in The Count of Monte Cristo.)
But I love a line in Bridget Jones too. Actually, it's not just The Line that I like so much. It's the delivery of The Line (which makes all the difference, I guess). I remember the first time I watched this movie, how I was laughing through so many scenes. And then, suddenly, (around the 1:40 mark in the clip down below) Mark D. says what he says. He says The Line. And I felt like I'd been punched in the heart. Like suddenly I went from being all giggly over this scene to being a little bit floored by it.
Because, not to get all melodramatic or anything, but I think what he says right then ... pretty much sums up the love every body's hoping for. Not just the romantic kind of love even, but the absolute best kind of love that exists: the transparent kind. The kind that comes after you see somebody freak out, do something stupid, make a huge mistake, be a jerk. He's talking about the kind of love that comes when the pretty falls away, when the vices aren't quirky and cute anymore. He's talking about the true love that's still there, even when you see the truest kind of true, the most scuffed up, most ripped up, most ridiculously, monstrously unflattering part of a person's heart ... and you still decide you're going to love them. It's the kind of love that doesn't alter when it alteration finds, is how Will Shakespeare says it. Mark Darcy says the same thing, pretty much. Except he says it in a simpler, more straight-forward way. And he doesn't say it timidly. There's nothing shy about the way he says it, which is possibly what makes my heart flutter so hard every time I watch it.
I think that very simple line is rather perfect.
Just as you are.
Rock on, Mark Darcy. I raise my mug of Swiss Miss Calcium Enriched Hot Cocoa to you. And to turkey curry buffets.
PS - Some of my favorite Christmas movies are so obscure I can't even find screenshots. Like A Snow White Christmas. And Santa and the Three Bears. And The Town Santa Forgot. Anybody know those? I have all those movies on the same VHS along with some rocking 80's commercials. The commercials are exceptional.
PS2 - Anybody recognize the fourth screenshot? That movie is amazing for so many reasons, including the villain:
Sigh. Christmas specials just aren't what they used to be.
What are your favorite Christmas movies? If you're feeling festive, I would love to hear your favorite Christmas movie quotes too! :)

I'm a fan of:
ReplyDeleteElf- I die every single time.
Home Alone- because obviously. also, for a long time I had a picture of Macaulay Culkin and Elijah Wood when they were 11-ish as my desktop. it was adorable.
The Christmas Story- because "ohhh, fuuuuuudge. only I didn't say fudge."
Every year I have 2 christmas movies I watch kind of religiously. Those movies are (Are you ready for this?) Arthur's Christmas Special (The aardvark guy? I've watched that every year since I was really little, and I can't handle a christmas without it, it just wouldn't be christmas without crying over arthur dropping his mom's glass bird) AND... Stolen Miracle (I feel this one is so much more grown up.) Those are my 2 christmas movies.
ReplyDeleteI love Bridget Jones-it makes me laugh and on my gosh, THAT LINE! I swoon every time. I think you're right-it's so wonderful because it is the love that every girl dreams of-that just the way you are love that is so utterly romantic!
ReplyDeleteWe have a family tradition of watching Faye's 12 Days of Christmas (with the William Wegman dogs) it's pretty funny especially when the dogs make cookies!:) I also love Christmas in Conneticut and Muppet Christmas Carol. I don't recognize some of your screen shots, so I'm going to have to do some movie research!:)
And old commericals are the best! We still have Muppet Family Christmas (another favorite) on VHS with commercials and it's awesome!
It's not Christmas without Kevin McCallister. "You guys give up yet? Or are you thirsty for more?"
ReplyDeleteI hate myself for hating Elf, but I do. I've tried watching it several times, it's just not funny. But then again I don't think Julian Smith is funny and apparently he's like the funniest dude alive. But It's A Wonderful Life is great too. And Unaccompanied Minors. And Eloise At Christmastime.
And I love that Prisonor of Azkaban and Anastasia count as Christmas movies in your book, I love them too.
Merriest Christmas!
LF
I think you've already read about all of my favorite Christmas movies. :)
ReplyDeleteColin Firth is so handsome. I feel really weird saying that, because he's old enough to be my dad {strangely enough, I don't feel weird saying that old dead movie stars like Cary Grant are hunks}. But he just gets more handsome as he gets older, which is a pretty unusual thing.
But you're exactly right- that's the kind of love that everybody hopes for. I do, at least. :)

1) you commented on one of my blog posts and i almost died of excitement. thank you for that <3
ReplyDelete2) tradition in my family is to watch it's a wonderful life on christmas eve, so that's always been my favorite christmas movie. as i've gotten older, it's started to mean even more because the themes are so much easier to relate to as an adult (if nineteen even counts as an adult) and the ending makes me want to sing (i usually do, because if there's one thing my family's not shy about, it's singing). i also love rudolph, how the grinch stole christmas (the animated versions. i don't really like the jim carrey version), and the little drummer boy, which makes me cry every time. i also love this really cheesy movie called christmas cupid, but mostly just because my favorite actress is in it playing the ghost of a hollywood starlet who choked to death on the olive from her martini and it's hilarious.
merry christmas!
White Christmas is my absolute favorite. Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye- they don't make them like that anymore. I love Rosemary Clooney's voice too!
ReplyDeleteI feel the same exact way about The Line. Makes my heart sigh every time. After reading this, I realized I'm much overdue on watching Bridget Jones and Mark Darcy fall in love.
Merry Christmas!! What is that fourth screen shot from? I am COMPLETELY BLANKING OUT! I recognize those toys, I watched that special all the time as a kid!!!
ReplyDeleteI love Christmas movies! I always watch all the kid ones..Frosty, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Rudolph, the Grinch...my all time favorite Christmas movie (and just in general) though is White Christmas! I can only watch it once a year though because even the best movies can get a tad tiresome when they're 3 plus hours long. I had my annual watching last Sunday with my best friend's family. I still love it :)
ReplyDeleteI can't believe its almost Christmas!
ReplyDeleteMark Darcy? I've never heard of that movie before, but I think it's hilarious that Colin Firth also played Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice. :) One of my favorite Christmas movies is, of course...It's a Wonderful Life! And I also LOVE White Christmas!Merry Christmas, Natalie!
ReplyDeleteEvery Christmas Eve the whole family settles in to watch White Christmas. I generally don't enjoy that movie any other time of year.
ReplyDeleteBut my sister, mom, and I love love love While You Were Sleeping. "Do I like jello? Mmm" Along with practically half of the movie seem to be our favorite lines. I don't think I could pick just one. :) And that is one I can watch all year long.
Your post make me think of a song by Mindy Gledhill I discovered a few days ago! I can't get it out of my head. But one of the opening lines is "I don't mind your odd behaviour it's the very thing I love. If you were an ice cream flavor you would be my favorite one." I love it! such a cute song about what people like to think about when they are finding love. Here's the link to the song! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKpN5bkoLJw&feature=related
ReplyDeleteI gravitate to the ones from when I was young also. Scrooged and Christmas Vacation are my two favorites.
ReplyDeleteAs a matter of fact I'm gonna watch Scrooged tomorrow. Also I'm following you.
ReplyDeleteLF, there's no shame in hating Elf. Mostly, and this is kind of a secret, I don't think Will F. is funny in movies. I WANT to. I think it's funny when people quote him in movies. I like his "Best of" SNL stuff. But I never get as cracked up as other people do watching his movies. I think my humor is damaged or something. Glad you love Anastasia. That one is perfect for any holiday. Or weekday. Or weekend ... (wouldn't it be amazing on a stage?!)
ReplyDeleteRuth, the movie was a special called "The Christmas Toy." Somehow, the universe smiled on me, and I was able to find it on DVD! But nobody will ever watch it with me (because they can't appreciate the cheese factor) so I'm usually up late one night pre-Christmas watching it alone. Ha :)
Allie, "While You Were Sleeping" is classic, classic awesome!
Jennie, gorgeous song! I hadn't heard that artist before. Thanks for the link!
Elliot, Scrooged is a great movie! I haven't seen that in so long. I need to break it back out next year!
Oh my gosh, THANK YOU! I can't believe I forgot that title! I looked it up on Amazon and I'm going to have to get myself a copy. And just so's you know, if we were in the same town I'd SO watch it with you! :)
