i'm dreaming of a pink christmas.

Listening To: Where Soul Meets Body by Death Cab for Cutie. Tis the season.
Line Obsession: "Once upon a time there was a boy who lived in a house across the field from a girl who no longer exists. They made up a thousand games. She was Queen and he was King. In the autumn light, her hair shone like a crown. They collected the world in small handfuls. When the sky grew dark they parted with leaves in their hair." - from The History of Love by Nichole Krauss

Tis also the season for swag.

One of my most girly tendencies is my proclivity toward pink. I'm not Doloris Umbridge or anything. I don't even wear pink that often. But as a bright pop of color, I don't think pink can be beat. I like that it's bold and feminine and that it can be elegant or wacky depending on the shade. I love pink flowers. I sometimes paint my nails a pink color that can only be described as "Barbie-Jeep-Pink." I love to wear those pink suede shoes in the header with a black dress. Or jeans. Or pajamas. (Confession: I can't wear them for long durations anymore because, weirdly, the shoes are too big now. ? I've long suspected that I'm shrinking. At this rate, I'm fairly certain I'll just disappear someday.) Valentine's Day makes me smiley because of all the pink hearts. And candy. Mostly candy but the pink hearts rock.

I like pink book covers too.

I had nothing to do with the covers of my books. (Writers almost never, ever do ... which you probably already know. I didn't know that until I started writing.) But I think it's fun that they're both crazy-pink.

I think you need some pink this Christmas. And I think you should be able to share the pink with someone you love. So I'm doing a rather fun giveaway.

Following is the swank up for grabs:

* Two copies of Paperdoll. And both copies will go to the same person. The idea is that you get to keep one ... and you give the other one to your best friend, your sister, your roommate, the girl you mentor, your Bible Study leader, etc. Maybe you can read it together and chat about it. Or maybe you know someone who would love to read it but can't afford it. Or maybe you just want to use both copies to steady the wonky legs on the couch in your apartment. The books are good for lots of things.

* Two Scrumptiously Bizarre Chocolate Bars. I picked these babies up solely because of the hot pink paper. Because they fit my theme and what not. But then I thought -- hmmm, what if I, unknowingly, bought gross candy for my giveaway? What if my readers never trust me again because I mail out dirt-flavored candy bars? That would not be acceptable at all. I want you to feel like you can trust me when it comes to matters of chocolate. So, in the name of research, and because I care so much about you, I bought one for myself. And they are so good. They flavor is dark chocolate & raspberry. I get that dark chocolate isn't everybody's thing. It is definitely my thing. But if you hate dark chocolate, then you can pass it along and totally make somebody's day. Regifting! (Chocolate note: if you're in the mood for a special treat, or looking for quirky stuff to fill up gift bags for the holidays, this same company makes a candy bar that's ah-may-zing with dark chocolate and candied ginger (they carry them at World Market). The wrapper is green though. Didn't mesh with my giveaway. But they're tasty and the pretty packaging makes them extra fun.) (Nerd note: I love hand-lettering, cool typography, and quirky fonts. I wish my Blackberry had an app like Shazam, but for fonts instead of music. Because that "chocolove" font on the edge of the wrapper? WANT.)

* Two bright pink Essie shades. My fabulous mom bought these for the giveaway. How sweet is that?! Mom shares my love for fun nail color, even though she tends to keep it classy and I tend to go, um, quirky. (She has informed me she is going nowhere near the dark green I've been rocking here lately ;). In the words of Stacy London, these pink colors are "totes adorbs." They look like chic-bubblegum in a bottle.

* And, finally ... two fine-tip pink Sharpie markers so you can underline and doodle and make notes all over the pages of your Paperdoll.
The markers are fun. I wrote with them a bit, just to make sure they worked (see above), and all I could think of was
Steel Magnolias. Do you remember when Shelby says, "My colors are blush and bashful!"

And her mom, M'lynn, yells, "Her colors are pank and pank!"

This giveaway is pank and pank, y'all.

And, I think, it is also super duper fun. I can't wait to mail it out to somebody. If you're interested in winning, this is what you need to do:

* Leave a comment on this post telling me your most favorite holiday tradition. It can be sweet. It can be quirky. I won't even get mad if you make me cry. I cannot wait to read what you have to say. If you don't leave a comment including your favorite holiday tradition, I'll just assume you're saying hey (which is also awesome) and that you don't want to be tossed in the random number generator *cute synthesizer music* to win this box-full of pink.

Also. I know many of you have already read Paperdoll. If you know somebody who hasn't, who might be into it, and you could mention this giveaway, that would be super.

On Wednesday, December 22, I'll draw a winner at 12:01 AM. Actually, I'm old and I go to bed early so I'll probably draw a winner sometime around 8AM on Wednesday morning. You get the idea though. Do note: this bundle of fun will not be at your doorstep before Christmas, but it should be there not too long after. Think of it like an extended Christmas. An extended pank and pank Christmas. :)

Whew! I can't wait to hear your favorite holiday traditions down in the comments. And did I mention that your comments on my freckle face post were way too sweet? They were wonderful. I loved reading about the sweet memories you've made your dads. Those comments made my heart hurt in a good way. I think that's exactly how a person is supposed to feel during this season.

I'll be back next week with some more holiday-fun posting. I'm hoping to introduce you to The Rogue Accountant's new sidekick ... a fuzzy little furball of a dog named Kramer. Kramer looks like a miniature Ewok. You are going to freak. Happy Weekending!

  2. Dearest Natalie,

I love this giveaway. It makes my heart happy.

My favorite holiday tradition has to be the one we started several years ago at Thanksgiving.

My dad is the missions pastor at our church, and so he's somewhat involve with the campus (we have a college in our town that attracts a lot of international students) program for internationals. My church has a program called friendship families. Basically, it's the idea that you get an international, spend time with him/her, get to know them, invite them to dinner, and whatnot. Our student is a young Indian. He's been apart of our "family" for several years.

When we met him, he was single, now, he's married with a newborn baby. (side note, he's here in America, while his lovely wife and newborn son are in India. he won't get to meet his son until he's over a month old.)

For the past three or four years, he's been a part of our Thanksgiving. It's been so much fun to get to know him and his wife. This year, a Saudi couple joined us for Thanksgiving.

At our Thanksgiving table: born and raised Hoosiers, my family, who has lived around the world, our Hindu friend, and an sweet Saudi couple pregnant with their first baby.

    It was lovely

  3. For some reason getting a new ornament every year has always been the Holiday tradition that is the closest to my heart. Being able to recollect every memory as I touch every old and new ornament to place on the branches of my Christmas tree each year reminds me of all of the pains, difficulties, joys and blessings that have touched my family and I over the years of my life.

I have not read 'Paperdoll' yet, but I want to oh so badly! 'Steel Magnolias' is one of mine and my momma's fave southern girly movies! =)

  4. My favorite tradition is probably the fact that my brother and I forget about our stockings nearly every Christmas. My mom always has to remind us to check them. Now that my brother and I are older, though, we're starting new family traditions, and my favorite of those is making and eating - moreso the eating ;] - of pineapple pastelitos, which are pineapple pastries. They're so delicious!

  5. As a child, my favorite family tradition was each of us grandchildren getting a new ornament from Grandma. Now that I am too old to get ornaments anymore, my favorite tradition has been the holiday food. Mac and Cheese with breadcrumbs for Christmas Eve and Lasagna on New Year's Eve.

  7. My favorite holiday tradition is drinking custard and listening to my Grandaddy tell the Christmas story.

Thanks for the giveaway! What fun!

  8. One of my favorite holiday traditions is making cookies with my grandma. She lives in a retirement home now and can't bake cookies in her little apartment, but I have been given the secret family recipe. I have started making them and bringing them to the family holiday shindigs. I may not be making them with my grandma, but in my kitchen all the memories flood back. I remember the good times before it all got sour. Seeing her smile when I bring them to her apartment warms my heart.

  9. Yay, PINK! I love it. And I actually have a high-school girl in my church who was asking me to spend some time with her recently.. if I win this, it will totally give us a chance to get together every week!

My favorite holiday tradition right now is how long it takes my family to open gifts. We savor it, like you would dark chocolate. Every gift is wrapped in wrapping paper (no bags allowed!) and we re-use the same set of boxes each Christmas until they're worn out (Everyone pretends to be excited when they have the power drill box, as if that's really what's inside). But to make it extra special everyone gets a pen and writes down on the lid of the box their name, the year, and what they got in it. It's fun to remember each year what everyone got the year before.

  11. I completely and totally shrieked when this post showed up in my RSS feed. I've been eagerly anticipating pink christmas. :)

We have several traditions that I love, so choosing one is a bit hard. But my favorite is probably the first thing that happens on Christmas morning. One of my three younger sibs wakes up while it's still very much dark outside, then runs around waking up everyone else. My parents drag themselves out of bed (since they stayed up nearly all night wrapping gifts and placing them under the tree), and up the stairs. The four of us kids wait impatiently at the foot of the stairs (behind a baby gate, hahaha) while Mom and Dad make sure that everything is in place.

The tradition love for me is the moment when we kids get our first glimpse of the room: everything is warm and orange from the fire and the lights of the tree, and there are gifts everywhere. My parents laugh and my sibs gasp, and Christmas begins.

P.S. I know that the drawing is random, but I REEEEEAAAALLLYYY want to win. I've wanted Paperdoll for ages, but I haven't been able to get my hands on a copy yet. Just throwin' that out there. :)

  12. My favorite Christmas tradition is when our whole family takes a train ride into the city on Christmas Eve. It's a super quick ride, and it costs more than just driving there, but it's my favorite. We've been doing it since I was a little girl, and I look forward to it every year! We spend the afternoon at Crown Center (a big shopping center owned by Hallmark) and eat and look at the lights and all that good Christmas stuff!

  13. this giveaway could not be any cuter!!! I love pink too. Always have. Always will. It's not my fave color though. I firmly believe that yellow makes everything better.
My favorite Christmas tradition, isn't raelly a tradition, just something that always happens... driving through town at night when all the car's headlights look like Christmas lights and we're listening to carols as a family.

  14. My favorite Christmas tradition is a gift exchange that I do with my five siblings. Every Thanksgiving my five siblings and I draws names out of a hat and then buy a gift for our siblings name we drew. Then on the night before Christmas Eve (we have always called it Christmas Eve Eve)we finally trade gifts. It is so much fun and we always keep the secret. :)
Thank you so much for doing this contest. Merry Christmas <3

  15. Favorite Holiday Tradition: Kids table :)

Every Christmas my family of four (Mom, Dad, Sister, and I) travel down to my grandma and grandpa's house. As does my aunts, uncles, and cousins. My four cousins and my sister and I have made so many memories at the kids table out in the sun room. We always have so much to say and we all want to say it at the same time. Needless to say, there is much shouting and laughing. And even though my sister is about to turn 20 and me 18, we will probably always sit at the kids table. Because its more than just a place to put all the kids now, its a place of fellowship and love. Of jokes and the shoving of too many mashed potatoes into the mouth at one time. It's tradition. It's not the kid's table anymore, it's the cousin's table.

I cannot wait for Christmas and to see everyone at to sit at the kid's table. It brings a warm feeling to my heart just thinking about it.

  17. One of my favorite traditions is the time my family and I spend together before we open presents. We gather around a coffee cake and juice/coffee, then take time to pray about our Christmas celebration and remember what God has done throughout the year. It helps us to focus on the reason why we're gathering in the first place.

Side note: I've been meaning to read The History of Love!
Other side note: Your brother's dog has my last name. This bodes well for the dog:)

  18. My favorite holiday tradition has definitely got to be Christmas tree hunting. Every Thanksgiving the family comes together, consumes a hearty meal and then packs into the teeny car and heads off to the local Christmas tree farm. Walking through the rows and rows of Christmas trees, all different and beautiful in their own unique way, with a saw in one hand and that long measuring stick thingy in the other while the family runs and shouts and climbs the trees, yeah that's got to be my favorite holiday tradition. Nothing beats spending quality one on one time with your family!

  19. My favorite holiday tradition is making sugar cookies for each of my 5 family members. My sister and I spend hours making, decorating, and styling those little versions of us.

It's by far my favorite tradition—the only one who doesn't enjoy it is my dad, whose cookie this year ended up being decapitated in a tragic accident involving an overly zealous icing application...

  20. My favorite Christmas tradition is spending "Christmas Eve Eve" at my parents' home with my niece, baking in preparation of our family celebration. She began the tradition when she was 5 or 6, and 10 years later it continues. I am a missionary in Mexico right now, but am packing my suitcase for Christmas in the states(!!) and cannot wait to spend time with my niece, who is a beautiful person inside and out.

  21. One of my favorite traditions as a kid was with my grandfather's family. We would have Christmas dinner at his sister's house, and all the second cousins would hang out in the den and watch "A Christmas Story."

Since it was on a 24-hr marathon, we never watched it in one sitting. We'd watch a little, eat food, watch some more, say hi to the great-aunts and uncles, grab some more food, watch some more....

To this day, I don't think I've seen the movie in one sitting, let alone in chronological order!

  23. So this isn't exactly a holiday tradition, but it is something that started this year and will continue in the future:
I started working my first "grown up" job this year as a child and family therapist at a residential treatment center for children who have mental health and behavior issues. This Christmas season, the children put on their annual Christmas play for the community. It was so amazing to see these children work so hard at memorizing their lines, and making sure that they are where they are supposed to be on stage, and also, to see the impact their performance made on the audience. The whole event put everyone in a holiday mood. I look forward to next year's play and seeing how many other people these children bless. There is nothing like seeing the Christmas season through a child's eyes.

  24. Natalie - I love reading your blog. It's so inspiring! Christmas traditions are my favorite! ;D My family and I have this tradition that every year we celebrate Christmas Eve with my aunt and her family, and then afterward we usually always drive around my old neighborhood and look at all the pretty twinkle lights and Christmas decorations together. It really puts us in the Christmas mood, and is the perfect way to spend the night family. We used to light luminaries, which were small votive candles put in almost a hundred white paper bags. Everyone in our old neighborhood put them around the edge of their sidewalk, so that the whole neighborhood looked breathtakingly lit up with all the candles flickering in the luminaries. It's probably my favorite memory having to go outside and relight them with my dad, and my brother, laughing and trying to see who could get them lit first, without the wind blowing them out. ;D

  25. This is the first time I've read your blog, and I love it. It's so cute and fun and happy. My favorite holiday tradition is going with my family to get a Christmas tree. 28. One of my favorite Christmas traditions is making Swedish hardbread. My mom's mom is Swedish and so my mom grew up with this tradition. If you guys don't know what hardbread is you're missing out big time! It's this really thin, hard cracker type thing, that I can't explain well, but it's the best thing ever and my family always eats it over the holidays.

Also, I have never read your book, Natalie. But I would absolutely love the chance to : )

  29. Every Christmas morning, my family makes "cinnamon puffs" for breakfast. Basically, they're like a donut: baked biscuit dough put in melted butter, and then rolled in sugar and cinnamon. They're absolutely fantastic and Christmas wouldn't be the same without them!:) Merry Christmas! Enjoy your moments with friends and family!

My favorite holiday tradition is baking cookies and fudge and what not with my mom for my boyfriend's family. Every year we make a bunch of sweets to give out. It is super fun and we get all hyped up on sugar and chocolate. I love to bake and spend time with my mom and it is alway smy favorite time of the season. :)

I saw Paperdoll in a fabulous bookstore yesterday, where they sell amazing books for really cheap. I also bought The Magicians Elephant and read it all last night. It almost broke my heart by how sweet and loving Peter was. I loved it!!

Your giveaway is super fun and sweet. (Essie is my new favorite nail polish!)

  31. Tamales! The tradition of eating tamales on Christmas Eve has been in my family for generations. My grandmother’s are the best (just ask anyone in town) and her secret recipe is being passed down to me. I still have a lot to learn about (the back breaking, time consuming work of) making tamales, but every year I get promoted in the assembly line. This may be the last year my grandmother will be able to make tamales (we made 37 dozen today!) and it is my goal to keep this important tradition from being lost. Although I am the only one of my generation brave enough to learn, I will continue the tamale making tradition for as long as I can still eat!

  33. At Christmastime, my house is full magic and good madness. I love the way my mom bakes too many gingerbread cookies. I love my dad's sneaky grin as he hangs tacky ornaments on the tree (when my mom's back is turned, of course.) I love when Charlie Brown comes on TV and the rendition of "Silent Night" at the end. I love everything about celebrating the holidays, but this year, I am especially excited about giving Jesus the extravagant praise he deserves- on His "birthday" and every day.

I wish I could tell you the number of times one of your posts has made me cry or giggle or sigh contentedly. You inspire me to love Jesus in such a big, big way, and that gift is even more beautiful than pink cheeks or rosy windows or the quiet glow of candlelight on the snow. Lots of love and Merry Christmas :)

  34. Merry Christmas Natalie!

I'm back in Thailand now for Christmas with my family (I go to college in the States) and I'm loving it! We started a quirky holiday tradition our first year in this country. Since it's hard for us to get certain ingredients for Christmas goodies here, we order pizza on Christmas day! In the afternoon we all watch movies together and munch on pizza. Some years my mom even puts Dr. Pepper in our stockings (it's a special treat since it's expensive and hard to find here) to drink with our pizza. :)

  35. I have a group of ten friends we refer to as the "Lunch Ladies". Mainly we eat, as the name implies. :) In December we also have an ornament exchange, the number-drawing/stealing ornament type of exchange! Fun times. My son says getting socks in their stockings is a tradition, too, however I refer to that as a money-saving policy. When they were little, the socks filled the stocking half full before adding candy. Now they provide padding for the itunes cards, etc.!

  36. I would have to say that my favorite Christmas tradition would be that on Christmas Eve we (the "kids") give each other and our parents Christmas presents. It's kinda like a prelude to the main attraction. We love giving each other presents and get really excited when it gets anywhere near Christmas because we try to be the one that gets everyone else the coolest presents.

Oh, by the way, I have not read this book yet so I'm hoping to win so I can get it :D

  37. One of my fave traditions: every year since we were about 9 and 15, my sister and I very carefully open one present to see what it is, then wrap it back up so you can't even tell we touched it. We are 26 and 32 now, and still the tradition lives on.

And I have not read Paperdoll yet, but would love to!

  43. My favorite holiday tradition is the whole ordeal of putting up and decorating the Christmas tree and the events that follow. My family loves decorating the tree with each of our own ornaments which each have their own stories and memories. After the tree is completely decorated, my dad, brother, and I lie on our backs and shimmy ourselves under the tree and look up at the lights. My dad always used to say that if you squint, the lights look prettier, like stars. So, every year we squint up at the lights while Manheim Steamroller plays in the background.

Another favorite Christmas tradition (because i could not pick between the two...) is Christmas morning. After we open our gifts, my family sits around the table and eats Christmas cookies together for breakfast as we sip either cider or milk from our hand-made Santa mugs.

Both traditions are very important to me. My family means the world to me and I love spending time with them, laughing and sharing life together.

  52. Hi Natalie,
One of my favorite Christmas traditions is what we call the advent boxes. Every evening after we do our advent reading for the season, we have three boxes. One box is want, one box is need, and the third is something to give to Jesus. My sisters and I all write something for each box on slips of paper, and stick them in the box. At the beginning of the season the next year, we get them out and read them. It's fun to see the different things that were important to us at the time. One year, my little sister said she wanted to give Jesus some jellybeans.

Hope you're having a great Christmas season!

  53. Natalie,
I've never been much for pink but this giveaway seems so fun I think I'll enter. My favorite tradition(s) I share with my little sister, Faith. We decorate cookies to look like celebrities or people we know. We never keep what we get each other secret. And we *always* sleep on the couches by the tree on Christmas Eve. Okay that's all. Bye. :)

  55. My favorite Christmas tradition is watching White Christmas with my family. We all gather around the wood stove with popcorn and just enjoy the movie. It is classic and it really puts us in the Christmas mood.
